How the tools compare.
Four different answers to "I need something now." Which one wins depends entirely on what "something" is.
RPG Builder — persistent, linked, visual. We cover most of what Donjon does — NPCs, settlements, shops, loot, dungeons, names — but every generated entity files into the World Codex and links to what it belongs with. Ask for a tavern and you also get the innkeeper, and both stay findable next session.
Does well: every entity links to what it belongs with, not just a flat block of text. Portraits, tokens and maps generate alongside the text, not in a separate tool. Search finds anything you generated weeks ago in seconds.
Falls short: an account is required, where Donjon needs none. The free tier issues 10 credits once rather than rolling forever. Only two systems supported, against Donjon's seven. Best for prep that needs to survive contact with next week.
Donjon — the baseline every other tool on this page is measured against. No account, no cap, instant. Covers 7 systems including Pathfinder, AD&D and 4e, plus utility calculators (XP, initiative, medieval demographics) nothing else here replicates.
Does well: zero friction — no signup screen stands between you and a result. Widest system coverage of anything on this page. Calculators alongside generators, not sold separately.
Falls short: output is a flat block of text with nothing connecting it to anything else you have generated. Nothing is saved between visits — regenerate or lose it. No visual content of any kind. Best for a name or a stat block you need in the next ten seconds and will not look at again.
Fantasy Name Generators — a specialist, not a replacement. Where Donjon's naming tables read generically fantasy, this site runs hundreds of culture-coded variants — Norse, Japanese-coded, Iberian coastal, grimdark dwarven.
Does well: culture-coded depth nothing else on this page attempts. Fast — results in under a second, same as Donjon. Free, no signup required.
Falls short: names only — no encounter builder, no dungeon layout, no stat blocks at all. Best for the moment a generic fantasy name would break the scene's vibe.
Kobold Fight Club (now Kobold Plus Fight Club) — the encounter-math fix. Donjon's encounter tools use the DMG's difficulty bands, which the community has long flagged as too generous at higher tiers. This tool applies a corrected multiplier that accounts for monster action economy, so a fight Donjon calls Hard often lands as Deadly here.
Does well: corrects for action economy, which the DMG bands ignore. Free, and the current build at koboldplus.club is actively maintained by its community successors.
Falls short: the original site shut down once already, so continuity depends on volunteer maintenance. Does nothing but the one calculation — no generation of any kind. Best for the DM whose Donjon-built encounters keep landing softer than the difficulty tag promised.
Feature comparison.
Our own figures are computed at build time from live data; the other three are read from their public sites and cross-checked via search index, 2026-08-03.
| Capability | Donjon | RPG Builder | Fantasy Name Generators | Kobold Fight Club |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Account required | No | Yes | No | No |
| Cost | Free, unlimited | Free — 10 credits, one-off | Free | Free |
| Game systems | 7 | D&D 5e / 5.5 | System-agnostic | D&D 5e |
| What it actually generates | NPCs, dungeons, treasure, names, calendars | 46 generators across four hubs | Culture-coded names only | Nothing — recalculates difficulty |
| Results persist between sessions | No | Yes — World Codex | No | No |
| Visual output | None | Yes — Art Studio | None | None |
| Encounter difficulty accuracy | DMG bands (reported optimistic) | DMG bands via encounter builder | Not applicable | Corrected for action economy |
Match the job, then the tool.
Two of these four still belong to Donjon-style workflows. Pick by what the content needs to survive, not by feature count.
Keep Donjon for a name or a stat block right now, mid-combat. No login screen, no credit meter. Nothing here beats it for pure instant recall.
Keep Donjon for any system that is not 5e. This is the gap that does not close. Pathfinder, AD&D, 4e, Microlite20 and Avatar Legends tables all live there and nowhere on this page replaces them.
Reach for Fantasy Name Generators specifically when Donjon's naming feels too generic for the scene — it is a narrow specialist, not a general-purpose swap.
Reach for Kobold Fight Club when a Donjon-built encounter keeps playing easier than its difficulty tag suggested — it fixes exactly that one thing and nothing else.
Switch to RPG Builder for a settlement, NPC or faction your players will meet again. That is the one job none of the other three tools on this page attempt.
If you are unsure which side you are on, count how often you re-generate something you already made because you could not find the original. Once a month means stay on Donjon. Every session means persistence is what you are actually shopping for.
Plan costs side by side.
Donjon, Fantasy Name Generators and Kobold Plus Fight Club are all free with no account — that is the baseline any paid tool on this page has to justify itself against.
RPG Builder meters generation with credits. The free tier issues 10 credits at signup and does not refill — a trial allowance, not a recurring free plan. Free-tier output is watermarked and capped at 1024px. Pro is 500 credits per period, unwatermarked, up to 2048px. We are not printing dollar figures here; plan pricing is configured in billing rather than site content, and a quoted number would drift out of date. Current figures are on the pricing page.
The honest framing: you are not paying for generators — three free tools on this page prove generators can be free. You are paying for results being stored, linked and illustrated. If those three do not matter to your prep, the paid tier is not worth it.
How to switch in ten minutes.
Do not migrate a back catalogue. Start with the next session you have to prep.
Minutes 0 to 2: bring one live thing across. Pick the settlement or faction your party is heading toward next. Create it in the World Codex and paste the Donjon text into the description as a starting point.
Minutes 2 to 5: generate its neighbours. Use the settlement's own generators to produce the shops and NPCs inside it, attached to the record rather than as loose paragraphs.
Minutes 5 to 8: illustrate the one thing your players will look at, usually a single NPC portrait. This step has no equivalent in any of the other three tools on this page.
Minutes 8 to 10: keep the other three tabs open. Donjon for instant throwaway rolls and non-5e systems, Fantasy Name Generators for the culture-coded miss, Kobold Fight Club for the encounter-math check. The realistic end state is running all four, not replacing three with one.
Common DM questions about this lineup.
Short answers to what comes up most when DMs weigh this exact set of tools.
Is Donjon still maintained in 2026?
Yes. It carries D&D 5.5 generators alongside the older 5e set, so it has been updated for the current rules revision.
Is Kobold Fight Club the same site it used to be?
The original Kobold Fight Club shut down. The tool DMs use today under that name is Kobold Plus Fight Club, a community rewrite at koboldplus.club that carries the same purpose forward.
Do I have to stop using Donjon to use RPG Builder?
No. The two answer different questions — Donjon for a throwaway roll, RPG Builder for content that needs to persist. Running both is the normal end state.
Is Fantasy Name Generators worth using if I already have Donjon?
Only for the specific case where Donjon’s names read too generic — it is a narrow specialist, not a general swap.
Is RPG Builder's free tier enough to evaluate it?
It issues 10 credits at signup and does not refill, so it is a trial rather than a permanent free plan — sized to prep one session end to end.
