Fighter / Paladin “Fighter 2-dip”Multiclass Build Guide — D&D 5e
The most-splashed dip in 5e: Action Surge and a Fighting Style for two levels. Paladins, barbarians and rangers all want it.
The synergy
Why Fighter / Paladin Works
Action Surge is an entire extra action once per short rest, and it is available at Fighter 2. No other two-level investment in 5e comes close. A paladin who dips Fighter 2 can Attack twice and Smite on each hit, then Action Surge and do it again — four Smite-eligible attacks in a single round. That is the highest burst damage any martial can produce, and it costs just two levels.
The Fighting Style at Fighter 1 is the other half of the deal. Defense (+1 AC in armour) tightens a paladin’s already impressive defences. Dueling (+2 damage one-handed) stacks on top of an existing style if the paladin took a different one. A second Fighting Style is not available to any single-classed character, so the dip is uniquely efficient.
The reason paladin is the most common partner is the synergy with Divine Smite: Smite has no action cost, it fires on any melee weapon hit, and Action Surge gives you more hits in the round you need to nova. But barbarians want it for more raging attacks, rangers want it for more Hunter’s Mark triggers, and monks want it for more Stunning Strike attempts. Two levels of fighter is the universal martial upgrade.
Ability priority: CHA → STR → CON — When paired with a paladin, Charisma drives spells and Aura of Protection. Strength for melee attacks. Constitution for durability and concentration saves. The fighter dip adds no new ability dependency.

Frequently Asked
When do I take the Fighter dip?
Most builds take Fighter 1 at character level 1 for CON saves and heavy armour, then switch to paladin. Others go Paladin 5–6 first for Extra Attack and Aura, then dip. Starting fighter is cleaner; dipping later preserves early paladin progression.
Is Fighter 3 worth it for a subclass?
Rarely. Battle Master manoeuvres are tempting, but the third level delays your main class significantly. The jump from Fighter 2 to 3 gives far less than the jump from 1 to 2. Stay at 2 unless you have a very specific plan.
Why not just play a pure Fighter?
If you only want martial combat, pure fighter is excellent. The 2-dip exists because Action Surge makes another class’s features — Smite, Sneak Attack, Hunter’s Mark — fire twice as often on the big turn. It is a force multiplier, not a replacement.
