The synergy

Why Ranger / Rogue Works

Ranger 5 is the minimum viable ranger: Extra Attack, a Fighting Style (Archery), spellcasting and an archetype. After that, ranger levels offer half-caster slot progression and exploration features that may or may not matter at your table. Rogue levels, by contrast, give something concrete every single level — a Sneak Attack die, a skill feature, or an archetype trick — and every one of them runs on the Dexterity you already maxed.

Sneak Attack works on any finesse or ranged weapon, and every bow qualifies as ranged. With Extra Attack you get two shots per turn; if the first misses the Sneak Attack, the second can land it. Hunter’s Mark fires on each hit separately, so a marked Sneak Attack turn looks like: weapon die + Sneak Attack dice + Hunter’s Mark on the first hit, then weapon die + Hunter’s Mark on the second. The sustained damage outperforms what the same levels of ranger would have given.

Expertise is the feature that completes the scout fantasy. Ranger has Stealth and Perception proficiency but no way to double them. Two levels of rogue fix that permanently, plus Cunning Action adds bonus-action Hide — the exact action the ranger was spending Vanish (level 14) waiting for. You get Vanish’s benefit nine levels early, and the real Expertise the class never offered.

Ability priority: DEX → WIS → CONDexterity is attacks, damage, AC and initiative. Wisdom powers ranger spellcasting and boosts Perception. Constitution holds Hunter’s Mark concentration and keeps you alive on a d10/d8 hybrid hit die.

What makes it tick

Key Features & Spells

Extra Attack + Sneak AttackTwo ranged shots per turn, each triggering Hunter’s Mark, with Sneak Attack on the first that hits. Reliable damage every round.
Expertise (Stealth + Perception)Double proficiency on the two skills that define a scout. Combined with Pass Without Trace, your Stealth floor is unreachable.
Cunning Action: HideBonus-action Hide gives you advantage on the next attack (and therefore Sneak Attack) without waiting for ranger’s Vanish at level 14.
Pass Without Trace+10 Stealth for the party, from a 2nd-level ranger slot. With Expertise in Stealth, the scout can pull the entire group through undetected.
Hunter’s Mark + Sneak AttackBoth fire on the same hit. A single marked Sneak Attack with a longbow is weapon die + Sneak Attack dice + 1d6 Hunter’s Mark. No other half-caster build stacks this much on one swing.

Counsel

Frequently Asked

Why stop at Ranger 5?

Extra Attack is the last feature that multiplies everything. Ranger 6–8 gives exploration ribbon features (Land’s Stride, Hide in Plain Sight) that may never trigger. Rogue levels give a Sneak Attack die, skills or an archetype feature every single level. The opportunity cost reverses after ranger 5.

Gloom Stalker or Hunter?

Gloom Stalker has the stronger first round (Dread Ambusher extra attack + 1d8) and invisibility to darkvision, which is free advantage. Hunter’s Colossus Slayer gives 1d8 every turn on a wounded target with no resource cost. Gloom Stalker is better in dungeons; Hunter is better in open daylight.

Which Roguish Archetype?

Scout is the thematic slam — more Expertise and a reaction move away from melee. Assassin pairs with Gloom Stalker for a terrifying first round. Arcane Trickster gives Shield and Find Familiar, but the Intelligence investment clashes with Wisdom.
