The synergy

Why Wizard / Fighter Works

The wizard’s biggest weakness is fragility: d6 hit points, no armour, and a Constitution save proficiency you have to earn with a feat. A one- or two-level Fighter dip solves all three in the first session.

Fighter 1 gives Constitution save proficiency (the concentration stat), medium armour, shields, and Second Wind — a safety net that costs you nothing on your best turns. Fighter 2 adds Action Surge: once per short rest you take a second action, which means two levelled spells in one turn. A Fireball followed by a Fireball, or a Wall of Force followed by a Sickening Radiance, ends encounters on the spot.

The cost is one level of spell progression. You reach 3rd-level spells at character level 6 instead of 5. In exchange you are dramatically harder to kill and have the single best nova turn in the game. Most tables consider that trade excellent.

Ability priority: INT → CON → STR (13)Intelligence drives everything. Constitution holds concentration. You need 13 Strength to multiclass into Fighter — the one tax stat.

When to take what

Level Breakpoints

Fighter 1Constitution save proficiency, medium armour, shields, Second Wind, a Fighting Style (Defense +1 AC).
Fighter 2Action Surge — two levelled spells in a single turn. The nova round that defines this build.
Wizard 3 (char 5)First 3rd-level spell slot. Fireball and Counterspell come one level late but you arrive in armour.
Wizard 9 (char 11)5th-level spells: Wall of Force, Animate Objects, Telekinesis. The power spike that rewards staying Wizard.
Wizard 17 (char 19)9th-level spell — Wish. One level late, but you still get it at a normal campaign endpoint.

What makes it tick

Key Features & Spells

Action SurgeA second action once per short rest. Two levelled spells in one turn — the highest spike damage a wizard can reach.
CON Save ProficiencyConcentration checks become reliable without spending a feat on Resilient (CON) or War Caster.
Armour + ShieldMedium armour + shield pushes AC to 19 before Shield. With the Shield spell, 24 AC on demand.
Defense Fighting Style+1 AC from Fighting Style stacks with everything. Tiny, free, permanent.
Second WindA bonus-action self-heal once per short rest. Not much, but it has saved more wizards than Wish.

Counsel

Frequently Asked

Should I start as Fighter or Wizard?

Fighter 1 first. You get Constitution save proficiency, armour and hit points from level 1. Starting Wizard then dipping Fighter gives Intelligence and Wisdom saves instead — less useful for concentration.

Is Fighter 2 worth delaying spells?

Yes for most campaigns. Action Surge is the single strongest feature you can get for two levels, and spell progression only falls one level behind. If your campaign ends at level 6-7, take only Fighter 1.

What Arcane Tradition works best?

Evocation (Sculpt Spells + Action Surge double Fireball), War Magic (bonus to initiative and saves), or Abjuration (Arcane Ward stacks with your new armour). All three benefit from the durability.
