Components: V, S, M (a tiny ball of bat guano and sulfur)

A bright streak flashes from your pointing finger to a point you choose within range and then blossoms with a low roar into an explosion of flame. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a dexterity saving throw. A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

The fire spreads around corners. It ignites flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried.

At higher levelsWhen you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 3rd.

Best Used For

1The damage benchmark of the whole game — 8d6 (28 average) in a 20-foot radius for a 3rd-level slot is the number every other blast is measured against.
2Three or more clustered enemies. Against one target it is a waste; against five it is the best turn you will have all fight.
3Remember it spreads around corners and ignites what nobody is carrying. It is a demolition tool as much as a weapon.
4The classic trap: your own party is in the radius. Evocation wizards get Sculpt Spells for exactly this reason.

Counsel

Fireball, Answered

How much damage does Fireball do in 5e?

8d6 fire damage — 28 on average — in a 20-foot radius, Dexterity save for half. Each slot level above 3rd adds 1d6, so a 5th-level slot deals 10d6.

What classes get Fireball?

Wizards and sorcerers get it on their list at 5th level. Others reach it through Magical Secrets (bard), the Fiend patron (warlock), or the Light domain (cleric).

Does Fireball hurt allies?

Yes — everything in the sphere rolls the save, friend or otherwise. The Evocation wizard’s Sculpt Spells and the sorcerer’s Careful Spell metamagic both exist to solve this.

Is Fireball better than other 3rd-level spells?

For raw damage against a group, nothing at 3rd level beats it. But Counterspell, Hypnotic Pattern and Fly often win the fight more reliably — Fireball is the answer when there are three or more targets.
