Barbarian / FighterMulticlass Build Guide — D&D 5e

Action Surge doubles your Reckless swings for a nova turn, and a second Fighting Style tightens the build — the classic damage dip.

The synergy

Why Barbarian / Fighter Works

Reckless Attack gives you advantage on every Strength melee attack for an entire turn, and rage adds flat bonus damage to each hit. Action Surge then doubles your attack count for one round — at barbarian 5 with Extra Attack, that is four reckless, raging swings in a single turn, each with advantage and +2 rage damage. No other one-level investment produces that kind of spike on a barbarian.

Fighter 1 alone is already worth it. A Fighting Style (Great Weapon Fighting to reroll low damage dice, or Defense for +1 AC) is something the barbarian class never offers, and Second Wind gives you a bonus-action self-heal that does not cost a rage or a ki point. Constitution save proficiency from Fighter 1 is a bonus, though barbarians already have it — so most builds start Barbarian 1 for the d12 hit die, then decide later when to dip.

Fighter 2 adds Action Surge. Two levels is the entire cost. You lose one rage use and delay Relentless Rage at barbarian 11 by two levels, but the nova turn Action Surge creates — especially with Great Weapon Master online — is worth more than the 12th and 13th barbarian levels were ever going to give you.

Ability priority: STR → CON → DEXStrength is attack rolls, damage and the stat rage cares about. Constitution is hit points, Unarmored Defense and Relentless Rage saves. Dexterity is the other half of Unarmored Defense but stops at 14.

What makes it tick

Key Features & Spells

Action Surge + RecklessAn entire extra action on the turn you need it. Four reckless attacks with advantage, all carrying rage damage. The barbarian’s highest single-round burst.
Fighting StyleGreat Weapon Fighting rerolls 1s and 2s on damage dice, raising the floor on every swing. Defense gives +1 AC if you ever wear medium armour instead of going unarmoured.
Second WindA bonus-action heal of 1d10 + fighter level. Free, does not cost a rage, and keeps you upright one more round.
Proficiency StackingBoth classes share Strength and Constitution priorities. No wasted stats, no new ability dependency from the dip.

Counsel

Frequently Asked

When should I take the Fighter levels?

After Barbarian 5 for Extra Attack is the standard. Some builds take Fighter 1 at character level 1 for the Fighting Style from the start, then go Barbarian 2+. Both work; Barbarian 1 start gives you rage immediately, which is usually better.

Is this better than a pure Barbarian?

For burst damage, yes — Action Surge is unmatched. For sustained durability, pure barbarian is better: more rage uses, earlier Relentless Rage, and the capstone at 20 that pushes STR and CON to 24. In campaigns that end around 12–15, the dip wins.

How is this different from Fighter/Barbarian?

Barbarian-primary keeps more rage uses, a bigger rage damage bonus, and gets Relentless Rage. Fighter-primary gets the third and fourth attacks at 11 and 20. Barbarian-primary is tankier; Fighter-primary does more sustained DPR.
