Monk / BarbarianMulticlass Build Guide — D&D 5e
Tempting (Unarmored Defense on both), but Rage forbids spells and monks lean on ki, not fury. Fun, but the two chassis fight each other; commit to one.
The synergy
Why Monk / Barbarian Works
The pitch writes itself: both classes have Unarmored Defense, both want to be in melee, and rage’s damage resistance layered on top of a monk’s mobility sounds like the ultimate skirmisher. In practice, the two chassis compete for the same resources and contradict each other’s assumptions. This is worth building only if you understand what you are giving up — and honestly decide that the fun is worth the cost.
The mechanical conflict is specific. Unarmored Defense appears in both classes but you can only use one formula: either 10 + DEX + WIS (monk) or 10 + DEX + CON (barbarian). They do not stack. Rage requires Strength-based melee attacks for its damage bonus, but monks attack with Dexterity; you can use Strength for monk weapons, but then your attack stat and your AC stat diverge, worsening the MAD problem the monk already has. Stunning Strike costs ki (keyed to Wisdom), while Reckless Attack works off Strength — the build wants three high stats instead of two.
The version that works best is Barbarian 1 / Monk X. One barbarian level gives two rages per day and the Constitution-based Unarmored Defense formula, which is better than the monk’s if your Constitution is higher than your Wisdom (common at low levels). Rage’s damage resistance covers the monk’s d8 fragility for a couple of fights. After that, go pure monk and use rage as a panic button. Do not invest deeper into barbarian unless you are genuinely willing to sacrifice Stunning Strike progression and late-game monk features.
Ability priority: STR → DEX → CON (or WIS) — If you commit to this, Strength is needed for rage damage bonus. Dexterity is AC and monk attacks. Constitution or Wisdom is the third stat for your chosen Unarmored Defense formula. Three stats competing for one budget — this is the core problem.

Frequently Asked
Do ki abilities work during rage?
Rules as written, yes — ki abilities are not spells, and rage only prevents casting spells and concentrating. But some DMs rule that ki is magical energy and therefore blocked by rage. This is the single most important ruling to confirm before you invest. If your DM says no, the entire build collapses.
Is this build actually good?
It is fun, it is thematic, and it is strictly worse than either class played pure. The MAD problem (needing STR, DEX, CON and WIS) means your numbers are lower everywhere, and the action economy conflicts mean you are choosing between monk tools and barbarian tools every turn. Play it for the concept, not for optimisation.
Barbarian 1 / Monk X or deeper?
Barbarian 1 is the maximum defensible dip. Two rages per day as a damage-resistance panic button, plus the CON-based AC formula if it beats your Wisdom. Going deeper costs ki, Stunning Strike and Diamond Soul — every additional barbarian level is a level where the monk stops being a monk.
