The synergy

Why Warlock / Paladin Works

From the warlock’s perspective, the Padlock is a warlock dip bolted onto a paladin chassis. Your contribution is Pact Magic: slots that recharge on a short rest, meaning the paladin’s Divine Smite never runs dry. Two short rests per adventuring day turns two warlock slots into six extra smites — a sustained damage increase no other dip can match.

Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast is the other half of the package. A pure paladin’s ranged option is throwing a javelin for 1d6 + STR at 30 feet. Your dip replaces that with 1d10 + CHA force damage at 120 feet, scaling beams with character level. Flying enemies, kiting encounters, and ranged phases stop being dead turns.

The warlock’s patron shapes the build’s identity. Hexblade is the headline: Hex Warrior lets the paladin attack with Charisma instead of Strength, freeing the ability array to dump STR entirely. But Hexblade is not the only option — Fiend gives temporary hit points on kills (fuelling a front-line fighter), Undead adds a fear rider on Eldritch Blast, and Genie adds bonus damage once per turn. The warlock dip is strong with any patron; Hexblade just makes the math easiest.

Ability priority: CHA → CON → STR (13 unless Hexblade)Charisma drives Eldritch Blast, warlock spells, paladin auras, and (with Hexblade) melee attacks. Constitution for durability. Strength 13 is the paladin multiclass requirement — Hexblade can ignore it for attacks but not for the multiclass gate.

When to take what

Level Breakpoints

Warlock 1Patron feature + Eldritch Blast. If Hexblade, CHA to melee attacks on one weapon immediately.
Warlock 2Agonizing Blast + a second invocation (Devil’s Sight, Repelling Blast, or Eldritch Mind). 2 Pact slots refuelling on short rest.
Paladin 2 (char 3-4)Divine Smite + Fighting Style. Pact slots are now Smite fuel.
Paladin 5 (char 6-7)Extra Attack. Two melee attacks per turn, each Smite-able with short-rest slots.
Paladin 6 (char 7-8)Aura of Protection: CHA to all saves within 10 ft. The paladin’s strongest feature, powered by the warlock’s primary stat.

What makes it tick

Key Features & Spells

Pact Magic (Short Rest)Warlock slots recharge every short rest. Each one is a Divine Smite — 6+ extra smites per adventuring day.
Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast1d10 + CHA force at 120 ft, beams scale with character level. The ranged attack the paladin never had.
Hexblade’s CurseAdd proficiency bonus to damage, crit on 19-20, heal on kill. On a Smite crit, the burst is enormous.
Devil’s SightSee through magical darkness, 120 ft. Cast Darkness on yourself — advantage on your attacks, disadvantage on theirs.
Invocation FlexibilityTwo invocations at Warlock 2. Agonizing Blast is mandatory; the second slot (Devil’s Sight, Repelling Blast, Eldritch Mind for concentration) adapts to your campaign.

Frequently Asked

How is this different from the Paladin/Warlock Padlock?

Same build, written from the warlock’s side. The paladin file describes a paladin who dips warlock for short-rest slots. This file describes what the warlock brings to the paladin: Pact Magic, Eldritch Blast, invocations, and a patron feature. The mechanics are identical; the perspective determines which class is the base.

Which patron for a Padlock?

Hexblade lets you attack with CHA (dump STR to 13). Fiend gives temp HP on kills — strong in horde fights. Undead’s Form of Dread adds a fear rider on every attack. Genie adds CHA damage once per turn. Hexblade is optimal for stats; others are viable.

Warlock 2, 3, or 5?

Warlock 2 is the efficient stop: EB + 2 invocations + short-rest Smite fuel. Warlock 3 adds a Pact Boon (Blade for a second weapon option, Chain for a familiar). Warlock 5 gives 3rd-level Pact slots (two 3rd-level Smites per short rest) but delays paladin heavily. Most Padlocks stop at 2-3.
