The synergy

Why Cleric / Sorcerer Works

A single cleric level under a sorcerer gives the squishiest full caster in the game armour, shields, and the healing package — while costing nothing in slot progression because both classes are full casters. But the real engine is what Metamagic does to the spells you gained: Twin Healing Word picks up two downed allies in one bonus action; Quicken lets you cast and still attack or dodge; Subtle Spell defeats Counterspell entirely.

From the cleric’s side, you are donating your level-1 domain to a class that will never return to build on it. That is fine: the domain’s opening feature and bonus spells are self-contained. Life’s Disciple of Life doubles every Healing Word. Knowledge’s two proficiencies are permanent. Forge’s +1 AC needs no follow-up levels.

The sorcerer’s sorcery point pool scales with sorcerer level, not character level, so you are permanently one point behind a pure sorcerer. You also reach higher-level sorcerer spells one level late. For one level of delay you gain a domain feature, armour, a shield, and Healing Word — a trade that makes the sorcerer dramatically harder to kill.

Ability priority: CHA → CON → WIS (13)Charisma drives sorcerer spellcasting. Constitution for concentration. Wisdom 13 is the cleric multiclass gate — you will not target enemy saves with cleric spells.

When to take what

Level Breakpoints

Cleric 1Domain feature, medium armour, shields, Healing Word, 3 cleric cantrips. The survival package.
Sorcerer 1 (char 2)Sorcerous Origin, 4 sorcerer cantrips. If you started Cleric, you gain Constitution save proficiency from your first class — but no, you gain Wisdom and Charisma saves from starting Cleric. Consider starting Sorcerer instead for CON saves.
Sorcerer 3 (char 4)Metamagic: Quicken + Twin or Twin + Subtle. Font of Magic with 3 sorcery points.
Sorcerer 5 (char 6)3rd-level sorcerer spells: Fireball, Haste, Counterspell. One level late but you arrive in armour.
Sorcerer 9 (char 10)5th-level spells. Twin Haste on two martials, or Quicken Hold Monster + cantrip.

What makes it tick

Key Features & Spells

Twin SpellDouble a single-target spell for sorcery points equal to its level. Twin Haste, Twin Greater Invisibility, Twin Healing Word — efficiency a pure sorcerer already has, now with armour.
Domain FeatureLife: Disciple of Life adds 2 + spell level HP to every heal. Knowledge: two proficiencies. Forge: +1 AC. One level, permanent value.
Armour + ShieldMedium armour + shield = AC 19 before Shield. Replaces Mage Armor entirely and frees a known spell slot.
Healing WordBonus-action 30 ft heal that Twinned Spell can double. Two allies revived in one bonus action.
Subtle SpellCast without verbal or somatic components. Your Counterspell cannot be Counterspelled; your Charm Person cannot be seen being cast.

Counsel

Frequently Asked

Start Cleric or Sorcerer?

Start Sorcerer for Constitution save proficiency (critical for concentration), then take Cleric 1 at character level 2 for armour and the domain. Starting Cleric gives Wisdom saves instead — less useful for a sorcerer.

Divine Soul Sorcerer vs Cleric dip?

Divine Soul gives the cleric spell list without spending a level, but no armour, no shields, and no domain feature. If you need armour and a domain, dip Cleric. If you only want cleric spells (Healing Word, Bless), take Divine Soul and skip the dip.

Is this better than Sorcerer / Fighter?

Fighter gives CON saves and Action Surge but no healing. Cleric gives armour, healing and a domain but no Action Surge. For a support sorcerer, Cleric. For a blaster, Fighter.
