The synergy

Why Sorcerer / Cleric Works

The sorcerer is the frailest full caster in the game: d6 hit die, no armour, and no native healing. One cleric level fixes the armour and healing problems simultaneously. Medium armour + shield pushes AC to 19 before the Shield spell, and Healing Word gives you the bonus-action pick-up that ends death spirals. Both classes are full casters, so the slot cost is zero — only your sorcery point maximum and spell access are delayed by one level.

The domain is permanent at level 1 and should be chosen for its passive value. Life’s Disciple of Life doubles Healing Word output. Forge grants +1 AC on top of your new armour. Knowledge gives two proficiencies. Twilight gives advantage on initiative — valuable for a Quicken sorcerer who wants to set up concentration spells before enemies act.

The elephant in the room is Divine Soul. If your only goal is cleric spells (Healing Word, Bless, Guiding Bolt), Divine Soul Origin grants the entire cleric list without spending a level. But Divine Soul does not give you armour, shields, or a domain feature. If you need the defensive chassis, dip Cleric. If you need just the spells, take Divine Soul and skip the dip entirely.

Ability priority: CHA → CON → WIS (13)Charisma for sorcerer spellcasting and save DCs. Constitution for concentration. Wisdom 13 is the cleric multiclass gate — you will not use Wisdom for offensive spells.

Counsel

Frequently Asked

Cleric dip or Divine Soul?

Divine Soul gives the cleric spell list (Healing Word, Bless, Guiding Bolt) without spending a level, but no armour, no shields, no domain. If you need AC, dip Cleric. If you only need cleric spells, take Divine Soul Origin.

Start Sorcerer or Cleric?

Start Sorcerer 1 for Constitution save proficiency (concentration), then Cleric 1 at character level 2. Starting Cleric gives Wisdom + Charisma saves — less useful for a sorcerer who lives and dies by concentration.

Is this better than Sorcerer / Fighter?

Fighter gives CON saves (if starting Fighter), Action Surge at Fighter 2, and armour. Cleric gives armour, healing, and a domain in one level. One level for survival: Cleric. Two levels for burst: Fighter. They serve different purposes.
